All Genie users who are unable to send outgoing email using e.g outtlook, and are getting an error message need to alter their settings.
o2 have turned on SMTP authentication without informing it’s customers. Users will need to alter their settings in outlook in order to send outgoing email, using Genie as their ISP (Internet Service Provider) To inable SMTP authentication please follow the steps below:
Outlook Express Manual Configuration (PC Only)
1. Open Outlook Express 2. Click Tools then select Accounts 3. Highlight an account by clicking on the name of the account 4. Click the Mail tab, then click Properties 5. Select the Servers tab 6. Click the "My server requires authentication" box to place a tick inside 7. Click on Settings 8. Click "Use same settings as my incoming mail server". Click OK.
For more information on SMTP Authentication Click Here
Incoming mail is not effected, if you are having problems click the previous update link.
You can however use the webmail service by clicking the webmail link on this page to send outgoing email for the time being, as it uses a different outgoing mail server.

Update (Outgoing mail server) 3RD SEPTEMBER 2004
All Genie users are currently unable to send outgoing email, as there seems to be an ongoing problem with the mail server, for the last few weeks since the 5th of August. Whilst trying to send email using e.g outlook, users get the following error message: “The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was Rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'example@address.com'. Subject '', Account: 'mail.u.genie.co.uk', Server: 'mail.u.genie.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 RCPT TO: Relaying not allowed - please use SMTP AUTH', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79”
For some reason it’s still possible to send email to other genie email addresses from your genie email account without a problem.
Incoming mail is not effected, if you are having problems click the previous updates link.
We contacted BT to look into this as the U.Genie service runs on the BT platform, but have been unable to help us further, as o2 still maintain the mail servers.
We have managed to contact the person which was responsible for U.Genie within o2, and are awaiting a response, we will update this page accordingly with any updates.
You can however use the webmail service by clicking the webmail link on this page to send outgoing email for the time being, as it uses a different outgoing mail server.

Old Update (Ongoing Issue)
There is a problem which a small minority of customers are experiencing whilst trying to retrieve their email using outlook.
When using outlook to download email, emails seem to be stuck on the email server, for example: - The same emails are downloaded. - They download up to a fixed number (certain email) every time then stop. - Error messages appear, once the download has finished. (webmail is not effected, only if your downloading email from the server)
We are aware of this problem and there is a way to resolve this.
